Why Would a Qualified Plumber Need to Use Plumbers Putty?
Plumber’s putty is a soft substance which is used to make watertight seals around the likes of drains and faucets. It is considered to be one of the most basictools that a plumber would use and is sometimes used when plumbing fixtures are being replaced. This substance should not be mixed up with Teflon tape, as this is used to seal joints on pipes that have become threaded.
Different types of putty sometimes contain different kinds of ingredients. Most products use some kind of clay as their base ingredient. Linseed oil can be a common additive. Other formulas range from the likes of talc, different fish oils and limestone.
Plumber’s putty is mainly used when the likes of faucets and drains are being installed. This substance stays soft and pliable for a long time, which makes it an excellent option in situations where watertight, but reversible seals are needed. A bead of this can be applied around the base of a faucet, then it can be connected to the sink, and any excess wiped clean. This putty seals the join between them, stopping water from seeping out.
In addition to creating a seal, this putty is sometimes used when installing a sink. A line of it is installed around the area where the body of the sink is. The sink lip rests on the edges of the insert. By using putty, a tight bond is created between the sink and the countertop, which stops any water from seeping into the area beneath the counter. However, not every plumber recommends doing this because they consider it not secure enough to create a lasting seal.
Plumber’s putty stays pliable and soft for long periods of time, so it must never be used to seal any pipes or fixtures. In these cases, the seal is not going to hold. Pipes must be sealed with Teflon tape. In addition, the putty could stain the sink material, so it is advisable to use silicon caulk instead.
